Essential Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are just that, they are essential, meaning that they must be provided by the diet or supplements. There are two important classes of essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, which refer to the chemical structure of the fat molecule. EFAs are not easily found in the food supply and often times the form of these fats found in food is unable to be converted to the beneficial components in the body. Aging, stress, or a high consumption of saturated or trans fatty acids can contribute to an imbalance of EFA's in the body. Borage oil is nature's most concentrated source of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and is a good way to ensure adequate EFA uptake.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid, or CLA, is an essential omega-6 fatty acid found naturally in the fat of beef and dairy products. Since low-fat beef and dairy have become the norm in the American diet, CLA consumption has dropped and, not coincidentally, obesity has been on the rise. CLA helps to reduce the storage of extra calories as fat while also helping to utilize existing fat in cells for energy. Recent studies have shown significant reduction in abdominal adipose tissue in persons taking significant amounts of CLA on a daily basis. In addition, CLA can be beneficial for cardiovascular health, cellular reproduction and healthy blood sugar. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) have a part in running virtually every vital system in the human body. In order for these systems to function properly, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids should be consumed in an equal ratio. For centuries the human diet consisted of an equal ratio of EFAs, but modern food processing techniques and dietary tendencies have most Americans consuming omega-6s at high omega 6 to 3 ratio. This creates an imbalance in omega-3 fatty acids. This highly concentrated omega-3 fatty acid softgel contains twice as much eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as many omega-3 products, and in a convenient one per day softgel.
The American Heart Association recommends 3 servings of fatty fish per week in order to protect heart health. Fatty fish contains essential "good" omega-3 fats that are required for the body to function properly. A high consumption of omega-6 fats (from grains / grain fed animals) versus omega-3 fats (from greens, fish, and animals that eat greens) can lead to serious illness over time. In America a typical diet has 20x as much omega 6 as omega 3. Many people do not wish to consume fish on a weekly basis, so therefore they choose to add essential fat supplements to their daily diet regime, to help protect the body and balance their diet. Our EPA & DHA supplement provides the essential fats in convenient softgels.
Evening primrose oil is a natural source of essential fatty acids (EFAs), commonly called "good" fats. Essential fat supplements have been shown to offset the high consumption of trans and saturated fats consumed in the typical American diet. Research on EPO continues to support its importance in assisting the body in obtaining healthy joints, combating symptoms of PMS, gastrointestinal health as well as providing benefits to those with various skin care problems. High dosages of EPO, such as in our new 1300 mg EPO product, are often used for condition specific supplementation and lower doses are generally used to assist or maintain overall good health.
