Enzymes & Digestion

Essential to the absorption of food, our bodies could not absorb nutrients from food without the help from various enzymes in our digestive tract. Enzyme production begins in the mouth and follows through the entire digestive tract. The body reacts to the smell and the presence of food to increase enzymatic production and break down larger food molecules into usable building blocks and nutrients.

Lack of sufficient enzyme production may lead to malabsorption, bloating, gas, diarrhea and allergies. Populations at risk for enzyme deficiency are:

• Older adults

• Those with enzyme deficiency disorders

• Those undergoing chemotherapy and radiation

• Individuals with certain allergies or intolerances

We offer three forms of enzymes, and vegetarian options:

1. Chewable

2. Tablet

3. Capsule

Products like Chewable Papaya (#701) are formulated to break down starches and proteins, whereas the many of our enzyme product line formulations are meant to support the digestion of carbohydrates, protein and fat.

Bromelain (Item #756)

Bromelain is a mixture of enzymes found naturally in the juice and stems of pineapples. A proteolytic enzyme, bromelain helps with the digestion of protein, and therefore can be used as a digestive aid with protein rich meals. Some bromelain can be absorbed into the blood stream intact, so it has effects outside the digestive tract; these are called systemic effects. One primary effect is its ability to support a healthy response to inflammation. When used as a digestive aid, bromelain is usually taken with meals. When used for other systemic-type conditions, taking bromelain between meals on an empty stomach is best.

Chewable Peppermint Enzyme (Item #416)

Enzymes are as essential to the body as water. To obtain the benefits of nutrition from food and supplements, the body must first break down the components of the food. That's where enzymes step in to help the digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates and liberate the micronutrients so they can be utilized by the body. Many enzymes are animal based, making them unsuitable for the vegetarian diet. Our Chewable Peppermint Enzyme provides a complete, plant based enzyme complex. Additional digestive enzymes are included for support. When taken for digestive support, enzymes can reduce the amount of gas and bloating that occurs when consuming foods that may not be properly digested due to lack of sufficient enzymes.

Colon Support (Item #720)

Many people today do not meet the recommended intakes of dietary fiber. Thus, it is expected that an increasing number of consumers seek products to support digestive health. Additionally, many are concerned about pollution and environmental toxins, and desire kit-type products to rid their body of impurities. Certain plant compounds have been shown to modulate this process. Apple fiber and citrus pectins provide fiber to assist the intestinal transport of materials. Plants known to contain laxative-like effects are Slippery Elm bark, Cascara sagrada, and Marshmallow powder. The mineral magnesium is also used for this purpose. An adequate supply of prebiotics provides fuel for colonic bacteria to digest and thus produce beneficial...Full Details
