ANTIOXIDANTS

Nutrition Facts:

Antioxidants provide the body with protection from potentially damaging compounds called free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals with unpaired electrons that steal electrons from other molecules, causing a vicious chain reaction that wreaks havoc on the body. Free radicals can damage the body's tissues and may increase the risk of developing certain diseases.

Where do Free Radicals come from?
Free radicals are normal byproducts of metabolism, as well as environmental toxins like air pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, heavy metals and pesticides.

Antioxidants provide preventative care to the body, protecting against the negative health consequences that can result from free radical damage. They scavenge or neutralize free radicals, stopping the free radical chain. Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods, with higher amounts in plant foods. Many supplements are available on the market to help ensure that the body receives an adequate amount of antioxidants daily. Some of these are:

Traditional Antioxidants

  • Vitamin C
  • Natural Vitamin E (d-tocopherol)
  • Beta-Carotene (provitamin)

New Breed of "Super" Antioxidants

  • Alpha-Lipoic Acid (VL135) - a potent water and fat-soluble antioxidant involved in energy producing reactions; helps to recycle vitamins C, E, CoQ10 and Glutathione.
  • CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10 or ubiquinone) (VL197, VL198, VL199) -fat-soluble compound synthesized in every cell of the body; involved in supplying the body with energy. Occurs in the mitochondria (structure found in cell walls) to generate 95% of the total energy needed by the body.
  • Activin Grape Seed Extract (V L191) - A unique combination of grape seed extract, green tea extract and bioflavonoids. The newest version contains 5X more trans- Resveratrol from grape seed, the compound associated with health benefits from red wine.
  • Pycnogenol(VL194, VL195) - Contains over 40 water-soluble antioxidants. Primarily consists of an extremely powerful subclass of antioxidant flavonoids - proanthocyanidins.

Combination Formulas

  • Oxy-Protector Caps (VL136)
  • Ultimate Antioxidant (VL134)

  1. What is CoEnzyme QI0 (also called ubiquinone) and how does it function in the body?

CoEnzyme QI0 is synthesized in every cell of the body. It is naturally present in small amounts in foods, but is particularly high in organ meats such as heart, liver and kidney. To consume just 30 mg of CoEnzyme QI0, you would have to eat one of the following:

1 pound sardines
2 pounds of beef
2.5 pounds of peanuts!

CoEnzyme QI0 is an important component in the energy producing system of the body. It is found in mitochondria, subcellular structures responsible for generating about 95% of the total energy needed by the human body. CoEnzyme QI0 is the enzyme that makes this engine work. Its antioxidant activity protects cell membranes, proteins, and DNA from oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

CoEnzyme QI0 is a fat-soluble nutrient. In order for a fat-soluble nutrient to be absorbed, fat must be present. Experts highly recommend that it be taken with other fat-soluble nutrients (e.g., vitamin E, lecithin, borage oil, evening primrose oil, EPA, flax seed oil, etc.) and/or with a meal that contains a small amount of fat. Fat-free meals significantly decrease absorption.

  2. What is the source of CoQ10?

It is a fermentation product of bacteria from Japan. This process ferments glucose and inorganic acid on bacteria.

  3. What gives CoQ10 - 100 mg NL198) its bright orange color?
That is the natural color of CoQ10 - no food coloring or other ingredients, such as titanium dioxide, are added.

  4. How much caffeine does ActiVinTM Grape Seed Extract (VL191) contain per tablet?
Each tablet contains only approximately 1.5 milligrams of caffeine. By comparison, a single cup of coffee contains 120-240 milligrams.

  5. What are the components in the antioxidant Pycnogenol NLl90, VL194) and from where are they obtained? 6/01

Pycnogenol is a potent antioxidant (free radical scavenger) that is extracted from the bark of a specific variety of pine that grows in Southern France. It contains over 40 water-soluble antioxidants, composed primarily of proanthocyanin, a subclass of antioxidants. As determined by the Porter Method, the most accurate methodology available to specifically quantify proanthocyanidin content, Pycnogenol yields:

  • 65% proanthocyanidins
  • 17% organic acids, organic acid glucosides and glucose esters
  • 15% catechin and epicatechin (monomers)
  • 3% water
